Bosch Institute Sponsors Lifesaving Awards
Surf lifesavers and medical researchers definitely share one passion: saving lives.
On Saturday 27th June the Bosch Institute attended the presentation evening for Ocean Beach Surf Lifesaving Club, the club that dominated lifesaving competition at the NSW state championships. Awards were given to a lifesaver and a lifesaving team who were most successful over the Summer 2008-09 season.
For the first time, the awards were named “The Bosch Institute Award for Lifesaving Competitor of the Year” and “The Bosch Institute Award for Lifesaving Team of the Year”.

The awards were presented by Prof. Rebecca Mason along with Ms. Marie Andrews (MP for Gosford) and Ms. Belinda Neal (MP for Robertson). The recipient of the individual award was Richard Grimmond, dual NSW state medallist and finalist in the Australian championships in first aid, champion lifesaver and the surf patrol competition.
The team award went to the team of Brooke Carr & Rebecca Cooper, a junior first aid team who took out the gold medal at the NSW championships and a silver medal at the Australian championships.
James Robinson, a young undergraduate student (3rd Year B Med Sci) who spent the Summer in the Laboratory of Cris dos Remedios from the Cardiovascular Research Theme, has been working on how to perform functional contraction/relaxation measurements on heart samples kept frozen for up to 10 years.
He presented his data to the Light and Optical Microscopy Meeting at the Electron Microscope Unit three-day meeting in April. He was awarded the audience prize ($400) for the best presentation.
The title of his talk was" SPOC: Spontaneous Oscillatory Contractions: A functional assay of human cardiomyocytes".
Just recently he shared the Anatomy JI Hunter Prize for Prosectors.
