Bosch Young Investigators Symposium - Friday 11 December 2009

 

The Bosch Young Investigators Symposium (YIS) is an Annual Event held to showcase the brilliant biomedical research work of the Bosch Institute's Postgraduate and Postdoctoral community.

The 2009 YIS will be held on Friday 11th December, in the Eastern Avenue Conference Centre.

This exciting day will feature oral, and poster presentations by Bosch Young Investigators, and culminate in an informal dinner, with both students and academics dancing the night away!

Brief Biography on Presenter
Professor David Cook joined the Discipline of Physiology as a Lecturer in 1985, becoming Associate Professor in 1991. His research has focused on the role of ion channels and other transporters in cellular function. He was awarded an MD in 1995, and in 1996 the significance of this work was recognized by the award of the Gottschalk Medal of the Australian Academy of Science.

In 1997 he was appointed as The University of Sydney Medical Foundation Fellow of the Faculty of Medicine and became a full Professor. In 2004 he was elected to the Australian Academy of Science.

Also, in addition to his work within the Discipline of Physiology, he serves on the Central Sydney Area Health Service Human Ethics Committee and chairs the Clinical Trials Sub-Committee at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and is Chair of the University of Sydney Human Ethics Committee. He serves as Associate Dean Finance for the Sydney Medical School and is Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Medicine.

Diana Temple Memorial Lecture - Thursday 22 October 2009

 

We are pleased to announce that The Diana Temple Memorial Lecture 2009 will be delivered by Professor Mary O'Kane, NSW Chief Scientist and Scientific Engineer, on the topic of "The advancement of the role of women in science". The lecture also forms part of Wisenet's 25th anniversary celebrations in 2009.

The Diana Temple Memorial Lecture series was established in 2007, in memory of the late Diana Temple AM. Diana Temple was a respiratory pharmacologist and Associate Professor at the University of Sydney, as well as one of the founders of the Women in Science Enquiry Network, or WISENET. She was appointed as a member of the Order of Australia in 1999, for service to medical and scientific research, particularly in the field of respiratory pharmacology, as an advocate for the role of women in science and in promoting an understanding of science by the general public. The Diana Temple Memorial Lectures are organised to reflect Diana's interests, which included pharmacology, public engagement with science and policy, the advancement of the role of women in science, and the environment.

The Diana Temple Memorial Lecture for 2009 is supported by the
Bosch Institute, University of Sydney, the Australian and New Zealand Association for the Advancement of Science (ANZAAS), the Women in Science Enquiry Network (WISENET), and Jessie Street National Women's Library.
