Studying Honours in 2009

Honours information sessions

Information sessions will be held throughout Honours Information Week by the disciplines which administer Honours:

  • Pharmacology
    Monday, September 15, 12-1 pm
    Bosch 1A and 1B
  • Anatomy & Histology
    Tuesday, September 16, 1-2 pm
    Anderson Stuart Building, Common Room, Level 2
  • Pathology
    Wednesday, September 17, 1-2pm
    Blackburn Building, Pathology Tea Room, Level 5
  • Physiology
    Wednesday, September 17, 1-2 pm
    Anderson Stuart Building Courtyard

If you cannot make it to a session, detailed information on undertaking Honours is available from each Discipline website:

You can also contact prospective supervisors and the Honours coordinator from the relevant Discipline.

A small number of 2009 Honour projects on offer are in labs not affiliated with one of these four Disciplines. In this case, seek advice from your prospective supervisor.

Entry requirements

To qualify to enrol for the Honours course, students must satisfy the entry requirements and criteria of both the University of Sydney Faculty of Science and the relevant School. In order to be considered for admission to Honours, students must:

  1. have qualified for or be a graduate with a relevant pass degree from the Faculty of Science, or hold an equivalent qualification from another institution;
  2. have completed a relevant major relating to the intended Honours discipline;
  3. have a grade average of at least 65, averaged across at least 48 credit points of undergraduate units of study. These 48 credit points should not include Junior Units where the degree is available on a full time basis to high school graduates;
  4. have met the Science Weighted Average Mark (SCIWAM*) requirement of at least 65;
  5. satisfy any additional criteria set by the Head of School concerned; and
  6. be aware that admission is also subject to an appropriate supervisor and project being available.
  7. In some Schools and disciplines the SCIWAM requirement is much higher for consideration for entry into Honours, particularly when entry is very competitive.

* SCIWAM is the average over all second and third year units attempted. To work out you SCIWAM, you may wish to use the WAM Calculator on the Faculty of Science website.

It is NOT necessary to have a Major in, or to have been taught by members of, a particular Discipline in order to do an Honours program there - but your undergraduate subjects need to be relevant to the topic of the Honours project. You should discuss this with potential supervisors.
