Cancer Pathology Laboratory

Head of laboratory:

This group is involved in extensive translational studies of upper and lower gastrointestinal, head and neck and breast cancer pathology and cell biology. In colorectal cancer research, this group, in collaboration with the Radiation Biology Laboratory headed by Dr Angela Hong and the Colorectal Surgical Research Unit headed by Professor Michael Solomon, has been involved in studies using an in vivo tissue microarray model of the effects of radiation therapy on the expression of various genes and proteins, particularly those involved in the cell cycle, growth receptor and apoptosis pathways. In head and neck cancer research, immunohistochemical profiling of cell cycling proteins is being investigated in salivary gland tumours. In breast cancer research, this group is investigating molecular markers of malignant transformation of ductal carcinoma in situ. Proteomic research in collaboration with Professor Richard Christopherson from the School of Molecular and Microbial Sciences, University of Sydney, currently involves investigation of protein profiling of colorectal cancers. Professor Soon Lee and Dr Rooshdiya Karim are currently involved in an international multicentre study investigating molecular markers of malignancy in phyllodes tumours of the breast.
