Cardiovascular Disease Detection and Prevention

Head of laboratory:

We approach the early detection and prevention of heart disease at three levels.

  1. In our basic science work, we study the key early cellular and molecular events in the development of atherosclerosis, including cell adhesion to the vessel wall and cholesterol uptake by cells.

  2. In our clinical research, we study the structure and function of blood vessels throughout the body, to understand the early changes that indicate disease before symptoms occur, and to carry out trials for reversing early disease and preventing late disease.

  3. In collaboration with international groups, we have public health programs in the developing world in the areas of rheumatic heart disease, malaria, and atherosclerosis.
