Mucosal Immunology Laboratory - Honours projects available in 2009

An Honours project undertaken in this lab would be administered by the Discipline of Pathology.

Focuses on understanding cytokine regulation in intestinal mucosal immunity. This group uses histopathology, immunohistochemistry, ELISA, FACS analysis and molecular techniques (in situ hybridization, real time PCR) in our research.

Recent interesting publications:
Ramsay AJ, Husband AJ, Ramshaw IA, Bao S, Matthaei K, Kohler G and Kopf M. The role of IL-6 in mucosal IgA responses in vivo. Science (1994) 264, 561-563

  1. Sudden Death in Young Australian CSI (Sydney)

Supervisor + contact details:

  • Dr Bob Bao
  • Dr Rajesh Puranik

Heart disease is the most common cause of sudden death in Australians <35y. The underlying mechanism is unclear. Our preliminary data suggest novel inflammatory mediators contribute to heart attack, leading to death!!! Our project will focus on the pathogenesis of premature CVD. Would you like to be the CSI?

  1. Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)

Supervisor + contact details:

  • Dr Bob Bao
  • Professor Merlin Crossley

Affecting 61,000, at a cost of 2.7 billion per annum, IBD consists of ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease. Its aetiology remains poorly understood, despite decades of research.

Our preliminary data showed Kruppel-like Factors (KLF) involved in GI immunity, but its role in IBD is unclear. The role of KLF in the development of colitis in the animal model will be investigated.
