Retinal and Cerebral Neurobiology
Head of laboratory:
Our research concerns the cell biology of the retina, and how the stability of photoreceptors is regulated by environmental and genetic factors. In this work we aim to identify ways of influencing the environment of the retina (controlling light exposure, oxidative stress, oxygen levels) to stabilise and reverse degenerative conditions. The scientific work is done in rodent models of human disease. Clinical trials are beginning. Our work on the brain concerns the influence of haemorrhage on brain tissue, with special reference to the pathogenesis of dementia. This work is also done in rodent models, and on human post-mortem tissue.
