Vision Laboratory
Head of laboratory:
The first steps of visual processing take place in the retina, where the general disposition of visual stimuli is segregated into a number of simpler attributes such as: contrast, colour, movement and direction of movement - before being passed on to other regions of the brain. Each of these singular aspects of vision follows a specific pathway that utilises unique channels, receptors and neurotransmitters. The research conducted in this laboratory is concerned with exploring these pathways and neuronal networks with particular emphasis being placed on:
- Studying the changes which take place during the shift from daytime to night-time vision.
- The phenomenon known as lateral vision - where the sensitivity of the retina is adjusted to different light intensity levels to conserving the retinas' ability to form high contrast images (despite the changing conditions).
