Elastin and Elastic Tissue Engineering
Head of laboratory:
Elastin is the body's rubber-like protein. Elastin is essential for tissues requiring resilience, elasticity and such as arteries, lung, ligament and skin. Our research program focuses on how our tissues assemble. Synthetic elastin displays physical properties similar to those of naturally occurring human elastin and interact with cells to generate extraordinarily detailed three-dimensional elastic structures. These projects are directed towards repairing damaged elastic tissues and use our manufactured replicas of human proteins to make sophisticated shaped synthetic elastic structures.
